Where to See the Fall Colors in CT?
Like anyone who lives in the Northeast, we know that there are tons of great places to go to see fall around Newtown, Southington, or pretty much anywhere in Connecticut. You’d practically have to go out of your way to miss it. But if you want to catch a glimpse of the very best the state has to offer this year, we recommend that you start with this list.
1. Pachaug State Forest
If you are ready to see the most striking sights in the state, you definitely need to head to Pachaug State Forest. This forest is the largest in the state and borders Rhode Island. In the forest’s 27,000 acres, you’ll find plenty of hiking trails to keep you occupied for a day or even a weekend’s worth of sightseeing. But you don’t have to hike to see the best. The Mt. Misery overlook gives you lovely views in any season, but especially in the fall. Take a moment to rest at the Green Falls Area, for an autumn scene like no other.

2. Macedonia Brook State Park
On the far western side of the state, Macedonia Brook State Park could take the cake for the most amazing trails. The Blue Trail takes you up Cobble Mountain, where you can catch a full, outstanding view of autumn in Connecticut. The road to Hilltop Pond may make you feel like you are traveling through an enchanted forest. If you like, bring the family and a picnic to enjoy as you walk. And don’t forget your camera.
3. Mohawk State Forest
You can find a lot of places to see Connecticut fall foliage, but we have to admit that Mohawk State Forest is special. You can take one of two trails for leaf-lined walks through blazing red, orange, and yellow sprinkled with hints of evergreen. A scenic drive also might be just the ticket. There are lots of things to enjoy at Mohawk State Forest, from hiking to fishing, and you should consider a visit in any season. That’s why we call it one of the best spring getaways in Connecticut.
4. Shenipsit State Forest
If your travels take you to the northern part of the state, be sure to pay a visit to Shenipsit State Forest. Take a hike up the Shenipsit Trail to the top of Soapstone Mountain, for a beautiful overlook and all the colors you expect from Connecticut scenery. While you’re there, take a moment to visit the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum. This little snippet of state history is a great educational opportunity for the kids.
5. Haystack Mountain State Park
Hoping to find a scenic drive or a hike that will take you nearly to the top of the state? Haystack Mountain is a great place to start. The mountain road, located in the northwestern corner of the state, twists, and winds through the brightly colored hills. Make your way to the top, and you can climb the Haystack Mountain Tower for a 360-degree view that will blow all the others away.

Where to See Fall Foliage in Simsbury CT?
If you want a dazzling view that is well worth the effort from Simsbury, pay a visit to Talcott Mountain. The Talcott Mountain State Park offers hundreds of acres of recreation, but autumn is one of the best times to go. If you have the time and the energy, hike up to the top of the mountain and climb Heublein Tower. Don’t sweat the hike, and definitely take your time. The views of the Farmington River Valley below might be the best scene you take in all year.
