Summer’s finally here, and you’re probably already hunting for a spot to cool down. One of the best places to chill out and get back to nature involves water, and you know that our state has plenty of it. If you’re ready for a day trip or getaway that makes relaxing or staying in shape even more exciting, you need to check out the best lakes in Connecticut.

Best Lakes in CT

As one of the smallest states in the country, Connecticut has no shortage of beautiful lakes and trees. In fact, we have more than 3,000. You might not be able to see them all in a lifetime, so we’re showcasing our favorites.

Mashapaug Lake

On the border of Connecticut and Massachusetts, Mashapaug Lake is one of the delights of Bigelow Hollow State Park. You know it’s good when the locals love to visit, and they don’t even mind the tourists who make their way north. You’ll have an excellent opportunity to fish in the lake, but it’s also wonderful for swimming.

Bantam Lake

Bantam Lake has a rich history, so it’s not surprising that many flock to this site for its bird sanctuary and water ski club. If you’re looking for a lake that gives you some space to spread out and plenty of activities from birding to boating, you’ve got to take a trip to Litchfield.

Highland Lake

Highland Lake offers an excellent reservoir that doesn’t take you too far from the community. A reservoir that came into being more than 150 years ago, the lake’s had plenty of opportunities for the locals to develop the surrounding areas. As a result, you’ll find lots of things to do, especially fishing, swimming, and camping.

Lake Zoar

Ready for some excellent fishing? Head to Lake Zoar. This reservoir has ample boat launches, to make it easier to get the perfect catch. Take a break at the Sand Bar, which sits near the center of the lake. Or if you’d prefer, hike one of the trails that surround the lake.

Hop Brook Lake

If you’re looking for a perfect Connecticut swim spot, the Hop Brook Lake Recreation Area is a wonderful place. Take advantage of more than 500 acres surrounded by trees that provide excellent shade for hiking, mountain biking, or picnicking. You can easily spend a weekend here.

Stillwater Pond

Searching for that tiny spot that isn’t as well known as the rest? Stillwater Pond is a great choice. This 100-acre pond is barely a blip on the map until you arrive and see its shining waters. But don’t be disappointed by its small size. It is quite long and narrow, so you can have plenty of fun on your boating trip.

What Is the Cleanest Lake in Connecticut?

Hoping for a spot with still waters that make it easy to see straight down? Start with Lake Lillinonah. At 1900 acres, Lake Lillinonah is one of Connecticut’s largest lakes and the biggest one on our list. If you’ve ever wondered about the high home values surrounding the lake, you only need to pay a visit to understand. This reservoir offers miles of lakeside comfort for visitors and residents alike.

What Is the Deepest Lake in CT?

For a natural lake located in the northwest corner of the state, Lake Wononscopomuc claims the prize for the deepest of Connecticut lakes. Sometimes called Lakeville Lake, it hosts a significant variety of aquatic life. If you want to enjoy its depths of more than 100 feet, or take a boat across its 350 acres, be prepared to prove that your equipment doesn’t have any evidence of the zebra mussel. This invasive species can threaten the delicate life on the lake.

Does Connecticut Have Good Beaches?

Our list wouldn’t be complete without a mention of some of Connecticut’s most beautiful beaches. Since most of the beaches in the state open into Long Island Sound, it’s not quite the same as taking the family to a beach on the open ocean. You’ll enjoy calmer waters, whether you’re looking for white sands or rocky outcrops. Be sure to check out:

  • Hammonasset Beach State Park
  • Ocean Beach Park
  • Harvey’s Beach
  • Pear Tree Point Beach

Any of these beaches could contend for the prettiest beach in Connecticut. And if you’re hunting for the best spots for a spring getaway, you know Hammonasset Beach State Park is near the top of our list.

What Is the Best Beach Town in Connecticut?

If you’re planning a trip to the best beach town in Connecticut, you’ll probably find it in the suburbs of New Haven. Old Saybrook is one of our favorites for a summer getaway. Madison gives you access to Hammonasset Beach State Park, with everything that you love from small-town life. Feel free to take advantage of the boutique shopping and local cafés, when you’re looking for a break from the sun. That’s just one of the many reasons we consider it a great place to retire.
